I am way too old for that..To Coach that is...
I have no problem with people using my name I have it in my information on here for a reason. I think if I'm going to say something that I should at least stand behind what I say and be accountable for what I say without hiding behind a screen name. I've been here for some time and most people on here know me on and off the forum.
Back to the girls' bball situation...in retrospect I know I went into the situation naïve and I was wrong in trying to not only be a coach but a friend to the girls. I don't have kids and didn't have kids on the team so maybe if I did I'd feel different. I wasn't even that good in HS basketball I was asked to help during regular season, and my girls did well, so when I was asked to stick it out for the all-star team I thought why not. Do I regret quitting? Yes I regret letting parents get the better of me, but I just refuse to stand their and be belittled and put down every single game it's not worth my sanity. I'm done with that topic though I opened the bag of worms, but only to show the point I was trying to make, which is that there is a point when it turns from being a vocal fan to being a rude and disrespectful one. Just remember those girls on that field are teenagers and what you say does affect them, each child out there is someone else's daughter and if you wouldn't want people saying that to your daughter then don't say it someone else's child, be the bigger person.
BTW: I was not at the game, never even been to a softball game for the lady knights I wish them all the best and hope that this doesn't continue to happen for the kid's sake b/c once again they are kids.
Very well said!
Wow reading this thread, 2 sets of parents (at least) should be ashamed.
First off, a coach yelling medium is ...wait for it....COACHING!
You are supposed to position your fielders and if you have a set phrase to position people, sorry. It happens from little league on, I remember when I used to come to the plate and hear easy out, and watch everybody get closer, you know how you stop that, you hit the ball over their head a few times and you aren't an easy out or a medium.
And if I'm sitting in the stands and a pitcher is throwing outside, inside, high, low and my team is swinging at it, durn straight I'm going to yell at them to make the pitcher work. And if the other team knows that they are aggressive and swinging at everything and trying to put nothing in a good spot, good for them, thats what they should do.
You all ever go to a football game and have a great corner on one side, or a great linebacker who goes to their right better than their left, you don't think they are coached to go at the weak link?
You got a player on a basketball team who is only real threat, a coach doesn't yell deny deny the whole game. It's not downing the others, it is coaching!
And if a fan is seeing it and yelling it, so be it.
People shouldnt use names of people on here who aren't providing it and some of you really need to chill. I remember some parents who were like this to their kids growing up, and the kids were great kids, never said a word, but when they got out of school, they got about as far away from them as they could, because they had been embarassed for years.
When the parents are cheering an injury, then be disappointed in them. If they are trying to support their team, without really coming out and saying hey so and so sucks, etc....deal with it!
It is easy for most folks to criticize a coach because most people have never been a coach. That job is nothing but a continuing touchy situation. Most folks think that coaches just pick kids to throw on the field for gameday and then call the shots in a game. They don't realize that a coach has more parents than them to deal with. They don't realize that even though they love their kid that he or she may not be the best athlete. They don't stop to think about the time, effort and dedication of a coach. They don't understand the stress and criticizing a coach on any level endures. They can't fathom what it is like to be the focal point of gossip and frustration, cuz they have never stood in that position. A mentor of mine once told me that "the games and the conflicts associated with coaching any sport has to be left on the field"...and over time I realized he was right. A coach can't explain the predicament the job of coaching itself presents to the coach, cuz unless a person has walked in those shoes they have nothing to compare it to. But, as the same wise ol coach told me..."regardless of what is done or said to you or about you...it shows class when you show no effects at all...just let it all roll off you like water off a duck's back"...And, again, over time I came to realize that was the best advice I ever got.
You are 100% correct. A Good Coach is a special person in my eyes.
Also they are very few really dedicated ones around here. I think the ones at Coeburn are going to do a great job with the softball team in the future..
that is a good strategy, and that is why everyone was upset with our batters, for swingin at junk and not making her pitch a strike, i never said she couldnt pitch a strike , just that we needed to make her throw one before we swung....
I agree with you 100%! Alot of what is on here has been blown way up and unless you were at the game, then you have no idea what went on!
Next year this will be a moot point. When Va High, John Battle enter Region D. Powell Valley will not get past a first round region game and gate city will not make it out of the district.
